Shopify and SEO – does Shopify play well with Google?

Full disclosure – we’re a Shopify Partner and rate the platform extremely highly.
Shopify is our platform of choice for eCommerce due to its easy-to-use interface, robust features, scalability and performance. A question we’re regularly asked is how it stacks up against other platforms in regard to SEO. The answer is extremely well. Here’s why:
- SEO-Friendly Structure – Shopify’s structure is inherently SEO-friendly. The platform automatically generates a clean and logical URL structure for your products, collections/categories, and pages, making it easier for search engines to crawl and index your site. Shopify’s default URLs are descriptive and include relevant keywords, which is a crucial factor in SEO.
- Mobile Optimisation – With mobile-first indexing becoming the norm, having a mobile-optimised website is critical for SEO. Shopify themes are designed to be fully responsive, ensuring that your site looks great and functions well on all devices. This mobile-friendliness helps improve your site’s user experience and boosts its rankings on search engines.
- Built-In SEO Features – Shopify comes with several built-in SEO features that help you optimize your store without the need for additional plugins or extensions. Some of these features include:
- Title Tags and Meta Descriptions: Shopify allows you to easily edit title tags and meta descriptions for all your pages, helping you craft compelling and keyword-rich snippets that improve your click-through rates.
- Image Optimisation: You can add alt text to images directly within Shopify, making your images more discoverable in search results and improving accessibility.
- Automatic XML Sitemap: Shopify automatically generates and updates your store’s XML sitemap, which helps search engines understand the structure of your site and locate and index new content faster.
- Canonical Tags: To prevent duplicate content issues, Shopify automatically adds canonical tags to your pages, which helps search engines understand which version of a page should be indexed.
- Fast Loading Speeds – Page speed is a significant ranking factor in SEO, and Shopify excels in this area. The platform is hosted on powerful servers with built-in CDNs (Content Delivery Networks), ensuring fast loading times for your store. This not only improves user experience but also helps boost your rankings on search engines.
- App Integrations for Advanced SEO – While Shopify’s built-in SEO tools are sufficient for most users, the platform also offers a wide range of apps that can further enhance your SEO efforts. For example, apps like SEO Manager and Plug in SEO provide additional features such as keyword suggestions, broken link detection, and structured data markup, which can give you an edge over your competition.
- SSL Certification – Security is another crucial factor in SEO. Google prioritizes websites that are secure, and Shopify automatically provides SSL certification for all its stores. This not only secures data transmission between your site and its visitors but also adds an extra layer of trust, which can positively impact your search rankings.
- Blogging Capabilities – Content is king when it comes to SEO, and Shopify’s built-in blogging platform allows you to create and publish content directly on your site. Regularly updating your blog with high-quality, relevant content can help drive organic traffic to your store and improve your search engine rankings.
- 301 Redirects – When you need to move or delete a page, Shopify makes it easy to set up 301 redirects, ensuring that any existing backlinks or search engine authority are preserved. This helps maintain your site’s SEO health even when making structural changes.
- SEO Analytics and Reporting – Shopify provides comprehensive analytics and reporting tools that allow you to monitor your SEO performance. It also integrates seamlessly with Google Analytics enabling you to track all data. By analyzing metrics such as traffic sources, page views, and conversion rates, you can make data-driven decisions to improve your SEO strategy.
So, there you have it…
Shopify is more than just an ecommerce platform – it’s a robust SEO tool that can help your website rank well in search results. With its built-in SEO features, fast loading speeds, mobile optimisation, and extensive app integrations, Shopify provides everything you need to optimise your store and attract organic traffic. By leveraging these tools and strategies, you can enhance your site’s visibility and drive more sales.
But wait, there’s more!
Shopify providing the tools to perform well is one thing, but there are many things you can do as a store owner to improve your search rankings:
- Elevate your product descriptions – Make sure your product descriptions contain all information relevant to the product. Tell a compelling story to your customers so they are clear on why they need your product in their lives. Use relevant keywords that you know are probable search terms for your product. All these things will make you stand out in the crowd in Google’s eyes and help you climb the search rankings ladder (and convert window shoppers into buyers!).
- Make use of collection descriptions – Google crawls your collection descriptions and returns this meta data in search results. So often I see this prime SEO real estate left blank by store owners. Whether you choose to display it on page or not, I highly recommend using creative collection descriptions for Google to reference when crawling your site.
- Create compelling content – Fresh, relevant and useful content is highly regarded by Google. Make use of Shopify’s blog function and create articles that speak to your target audience. Using solid keywords will direct Google to display your content to the right people who may just turn into valuable customers.
